When you’ve been through trauma, betrayal, or long-term stress, your nervous system can get “stuck” in survival mode.
You may feel on edge, restless, unable to sleep, or like you’re never truly safe in your own body.
One way to gently support your healing is through sound frequencies—using binaural beats or isochronic tones to encourage your brain to shift into calmer, more balanced states.
But with all the different brainwave frequencies out there—gamma, beta, alpha, theta, SMR—it can feel confusing. Which one really helps when what you need most is safety?
Let’s break it down:
🧠 The Brainwave States and What They Do
- Gamma (30–100 Hz)
This is the highest frequency range, linked to peak mental performance, insight, and spiritual experiences. Gamma is stimulating, not calming. It’s useful for creativity and “aha” moments, but not for soothing a nervous system that feels unsafe. - Beta (12–30 Hz)
This is the state of being alert, focused, and engaged. It’s great for problem-solving and work. But when you’re stuck in high beta for too long, it tips into anxiety, racing thoughts, and stress. Many of us with trauma live in this state too much. - SMR (Sensorimotor Rhythm, 12–15 Hz)
This is a very special frequency used in neurofeedback to help people with PTSD, anxiety, and even epilepsy. It’s calming, regulating, and helps the brain feel grounded. SMR is like “calm focus”—your body settles, your mind is steady, and you don’t feel overwhelmed. - Alpha (8–12 Hz)
This is the frequency of relaxed awareness. It’s the state you enter during gentle meditation, a walk in nature, or before falling asleep. Alpha tells your body: “You are safe. You don’t need to fight or flee.” It’s deeply soothing for the nervous system. - Theta (4–8 Hz)
This dreamy state is linked to imagination, memories, and deep meditation. It can be wonderful for emotional healing, but sometimes it makes you feel too open or vulnerable, which isn’t ideal if you’re still working on feeling safe. - Delta (0.5–4 Hz)
The slowest wave, linked to deep sleep and body repair. Delta helps with physical restoration, but it won’t help much with waking feelings of safety—it belongs to the night.
🌿 The Best Frequencies for Safety
👉 The two frequencies that best support a sense of safety are:
- Alpha (8–12 Hz) – for gentle relaxation, peace, and presence.
- SMR (12–15 Hz) – for nervous system regulation, calm focus, and emotional stability.
These are the sweet spots when your goal is to stop feeling overwhelmed and start feeling settled in your body again.
✨ How to Use Them
- Choose Your Audio
Search for “Alpha binaural beats” or “SMR isochronic tones” on YouTube, Spotify, or a meditation app. Make sure it’s from a source you trust. - Set the Scene
Find a quiet space, dim the lights, or even combine this with your evening shower ritual. Let your environment signal: “I’m safe.” - Listen with Intention
Put on headphones (especially for binaural beats), close your eyes, and breathe slowly. You don’t need to force meditation—just let the sound do the work. - Pair with a Mantra
Repeat softly:
“I am safe now. My body is calm. I can rest.” - Consistency Over Intensity
10–20 minutes daily is enough. You don’t need hours. Over time, your brain learns to return to this state more easily, even without the music.
🌙 A Final Word
If you’ve been through betrayal, manipulation, or trauma, your nervous system has likely carried the burden of “always being on guard.” Alpha and SMR frequencies are gentle allies to help you unwind that survival mode and relearn what safety feels like.
Because healing is about helping your body believe you are safe again.
