“Twin Peaks” – This pioneering American TV series that has become a classic and essential part of the television landscape

Twin Peaks is a cult American TV series created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, which was released on screens in the early 1990s.

Its music, composed by Angelo Badalamenti, has left a lasting impression, and listening to it will likely remind you of something, if not evoke a sense of familiarity. A mystical soundtrack, it sets the stage for a mysterious and subdued atmosphere right from the first notes:

Twin Peaks Teasing

The series is set in the state of Washington – 40 minutes aways from Seattle – a very green and wooded region near Canada, covered with mountains, rivers and lakes.

The show consists of 3 seasons and a film called “Twin Peaks, Fire Walk with Me.”

It was filmed in a small town called North Bend and Snoqualmie (the town of Twin Peaks does not actually exist). The mountain you see is called “Mount Si” a completely accessible space for hikers.

Snoqualmie is a place where nature and the forest once reigned supreme before, as depicted in the series, men devastated a large part of the forest, reflecting a certain critique of society.

The natural setting of the series is very foggy, allowing it to create a beautiful yet eerie backdrop, making it an ideal stage for the tragic events that the small town will experience.

For D. Lynch, these small towns surrounded by forests symbolize rural America. The main events will therefore revolve around a sawmill, a lake, a railroad bridge and a rather kitschy all-wood hotel that actually exists and where you can stay: the Salish Lodge.

What sets the characters of Twin Peaks apart?

In this series, the characters are both ordinary and entirely strange. The creators blended genres, including elements of crime, the supernatural, drama and a soap opera feel.

This leads us to meet:

  • A sheriff and his Native American deputy
  • A corrupt hotel manager
  • A deranged psychoanalyst
  • Laura’s boyfriend and her best friend, who become a couple upon hearing of her death
  • A woman who communicates with a log…

The woman with the log is the character that best represents the quirky side of the series, which adds to its uniqueness. This woman seems to communicate with the beyond through ancient Native American practices, referencing the past when Native Americans peacefully lived on these lands, cultivating a rich and connected spiritual life.

Indeed, the character of Deputy Hawk, or “Hawk” for short, represents the ancient times and the presence of Native Americans on their original lands. His character serves as a reminder of the indigenous people who once inhabited the area before the arrival of European settlers and the subsequent changes in the landscape and society. Deputy Hawk’s connection to the past adds depth to the show’s exploration of history and culture in the context of a changing and often enigmatic small town.

The Knot of the Story

In this small town, a young girl named Laura Palmer, a beauty queen and very popular at school, is found dead, murdered on the edge of the lake. The entire town’s life is disrupted by the girl’s murder, and an investigation begins.

What’s interesting about Twin Peaks is that nothing is as it seems. Everything has a double or even triple meaning hidden beneath the surface.

The series is a critique of American society, which, beneath its polished exterior, conceals deep demons. It portrays the dreams and hidden vices of seemingly ordinary residents of a small American town.

A Series That Reinvented the Mystery Genre

The series was a sensation because it reinvented the “whodunnit” genre and elevated it to new heights in the television world.

At the time of its release, Twin Peaks was like a UFO in the television landscape. Its style was completely new, especially because television was somewhat devalued compared to cinema in terms of production quality.

With Twin Peaks, David Lynch and Mark Frost presented a television work of quality that rivaled cinema, even becoming a reference.

Some memorable aspects include:

    1. Yes it’s interesting to know it being aware it was the first TV show format that ever existed – something that made TV improve its quality a lot and a program that made the gap between TV and cinema become a lot more blur…
