Spiritual education: why parents may think upside down about their children

It’s very surprising to realize that so many parents think completely upside down when it comes to their children and it can be create awful traumas and long term problems.

This text from Khalil Gibran about relationships between children & parents perfectly puts this issue into words.

“Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s call itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you, they do not belong to you.
You can give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You can take in their bodies but not their souls,
As their souls live in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You can strive to be like them, but do not try to make them like you.
As life does not go backward, nor does it linger with yesterday.
You are the bows through which your children, like living arrows, are projected.
The Archer sees the goal on the path of infinity, and
He stretches you with His power so that His arrows may fly fast and far.
Let your tension by the Archer’s hand be for joy;
So as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves the bow that is steady.”
